Religious History and Archaeology
The past of Egypt is truly captured in the words of Omm Sety and the photography of Zeini. History comes to life in this moving epic of the pharaonic period of Egypt. The book is a real monument to its author as she was affectionately known by tens of thousands of tourists and professionals. Sety is a British woman whose real name was Dorty Eady, and who spent 48 years in Eqypt until her passing. Her "Abydos" desribes the rise, the glory years, and the fall of this former magnificent site. Emphasized is the beautifully temple of Sety I in Abydos of about 1300 BC which really belongs in the list of the wonders of the ancient world. Sety was known and loved by the many thousands who visited her and Abydos. Even if visitors forgot what they saw, they never forgot Sety. Through the media she is known throughout the world. Within days of her passing, BBC televised a documentary "Omm Sety's Egypt." This book is Omm Sety's Egypt-- all 282 pages of it.! ! The book is full of intrigue. All visitors will learn much of what he or she can see or has seen in their encounter with Egypt's antiquities.

Advances in Fingerprint Technology
Advances in Fingerprint Technology edited by Henry C. Lee and R.E. Gaensslen is a specialized book that focuses on the science of fingerprinting. It is an anthology of selected works by recognized experts in the field and includes a chapter by Lee and Gaensslen. The text highlights historical events, fingerprint classification basics, matching latent impression methods, use of laser enhancement, digital image processing techniques and computer applications in AFIS systems. It also examines the development of latent fingerprints by using the application of powders, chemical treatments and fuming compounds. In addition, the text includes a discussion of numerous reagents and chemical compounds for locating latent prints. Easy instructions are given for mixing and using reagents as well as a thorough discussion of the chemical reactions involved. The concluding chapter includes suggestions for testifying in court as an expert witness. This book could be used as a reference to determine methods for developing latent prints, and resourceful defense and prosecuting attorneys could use this text as a reference in preparing their cases. Moreover, fingerprint technicians and forensic scientists would find it helpful in determining which methods would be useful in obtaining latent prints. Forensic science laboratories and identification divisions in law enforcement agencies would also find this text a beneficial reference to have available. It contains a plethora of references for those seeking additional background and information on the topic. Anyone who has an interest in forensic science would find this text not only well documented but informative.

The Adventures of Charlotte and Henry
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (October, 1987)
Author: Bob Graham
Average review score:

Great book about friendship and gender reversal!
My daughters love this book about Charlotte--the capricious little girl who is "looked after" by her friend Henry. Bob Graham's illustrations of these characters celebrates childhood in it's very essence. Charlotte and Henry are very basic kids without prescribed gender roles imposed on them. It's unfortunate that this book and many other of Bob Graham's books are out of print!

African-American Inventors III: Patricia Bath, Philip Emeagwali, Henry Sampson, Valerie Thomas, Peter Tolliver (Capstone Short Biographies)
Published in School & Library Binding by Capstone Press (December, 1998)
Author: Susan K. Henderson
Average review score:

Wonderful piece on Black American Inventors!
The author describes the life and work of two female and three male African American Inventors and Scientists, including the contributions of agriculturalist George Washington Carver and Nigerian-born computer scientist Philip Emeagwali.

The search engines contain a thousand supplementary references to Carver or Emeagwali.

The stories are filled with the themes of perseverance and overcoming obstacles.

The inventions described include massively parallel supercomputers, petroleum reservoir simulation and oil recovery, uses of peanut, lasers for eye surgery, and a new way to make rocket fuel.

Excerpts read: "Emeagwali programmed the Connection Machine to make 3.1 billion calculations per second.... This speed was a new world record in 1989.... The record breaking speed of Emeagwali's invention helped people understand the value of parallel computing."

The photographs of the inventors and the illustrations of their inventions make this a useful book for K-12 school assignments on inventors.

This book is a must for math, science and black history related school assignments.

African-American Newspapers and Periodicals: A National Bibliography (Harvard University Press Reference Library)
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (February, 1999)
Authors: James Philip Danky, Maureen E. Hady, and Henry Louis, Jr. Gates
Average review score:

The most comprehensive guide to African-American newspapers.
There are a number of reference guides to African-American newspapers and peridocials. From the first known publication, _Freedom's Journal_, published in New York City starting in 1827 to the present, there have been more than 3,500 African-American newspapers and peridocials. Preserving the record of these presses is crucial. Not only did these presses serve as a protest organ, but also documented normal black life, especially as it existed under segregation and Jim Crow laws. In many cases, these papers provide the only extant record of African American life in forgotten and remote towns. Unfortunately, only a small percentage are preserved on microfilm or in other formats. The record of these periodicals is the next most important level of information. _African-American Newspapers and Periodicals_ does an excellent job of documenting these newsapers and magazines. Given the dominance of majority points of view in mainstream publications and the low number of black journalists, the African American press is an essential voice for the black community. If African Americans do not tell their story, no one will. This reference work is the best starting point for learning more about these publications.
